Spray painting is not just about choosing a can; it's also about prep and getting good results. The proper surface preparation routine ensures that every project looks excellent and is a piece of art in its own way.

Why is it important to prep the surface?

It is imperative to prep the surface before painting, as a smooth surface helps ensure effective adhesion. Uneven or contaminated surfaces make it difficult to paint, leading to uneven coats, dripping, or cracks that make the whole object look less appealing.

What are the steps of preparing a surface?

The process of preparing a surface is simple and easily doable. The steps are:

Cleaning

Cleaning is vital to remove dust, grease, germs and stains. To effectively clean the surface:

  • Remove all the remaining debris, oil, and other stains using mild soap and water or COSMOS MRO Foam Cleaner.

  • If any of the objects have been corroded and are subject to rust, using a rust remover spray is recommended. After using the rust remover spray, one should thoroughly clean the object so the paint can stick properly.

  • Cover the adjacent areas before cleaning to avoid creating a mess.

Sanding

The second step in preparing the surface is sanding, which evens it out. This step is vital because it helps smooth the surface and make it even. To effectively sand the surface, one should clean the object and use a COSMOS MRO Paint Remover which is a sprayable paint remover, to remove old residual paint. Use sandpaper on a metal surface to remove any flakiness. Once done, gently clean the surface with a cloth.

Priming

A primer is the final step before spray-painting the object. To make any object more durable and increase its longevity, a primer is essential. It enhances appearance and provides better coverage for painting.

Why is a primer necessary?

A spray paint primer is important because:

  • It helps in improving adhesion.

  • It increases the durability of the object.

  • It ensures that the paint does not seep into cracks.

  • It enhances colours and creates a uniform surface.

While undertaking any upcycling project, one should master the art of preparing its surface. By thoroughly understanding the roles of cleaning, sanding, and priming with home improvements sprays one can turn a simple project into a masterpiece with its seamless finish.
